Also, it was announced that the YNJC showcase would be organised in Finland next year, taking place in junction with the Tampere Jazz Happening 2015. Pauli Lyytinen Machinery Jazz-Espa: 25 July – 5 August 2016 Katu Kaiku Organised annually since the year 2000, the Young Nordic Jazz Comets showcase event presents the best of Scandinavia’s young jazz talent. Such Finnish groups as Mopo, AR Quartet, Ilmiliekki Quartet, SUN Trio and Kvalda have been catapulted to big leagues from the YNJC competition previously. Jazz-Espa is a traditional two-week concert series of Finnish jazz that takes place in the Esplanadi Park in Helsinki. 10 to 12 bands are selected to perform at the festival. Concerts take place mainly in the afternoon at 4PM and 5:30PM each weekday. The jury is looking for acts that are suitable for outdoor performing, primarily Finnish and have not been selected to go on a Finnish Jazz Federation-produced tour or performed at Espa in the past two years. The tours consist of 5 to 8 concerts around Finland (depending on demand). For the most part the concerts are organized by the member associations of the federation. All the bands whose members are mainly Finnish are eligible to apply. Please send only one application. If you currently lead more than one ensemble, pick the most established and the most topical one. Drummers Mika Kallio, Mikko Hassinen and Anssi Nykänen have made their mark on the Finnish jazz history with their unique instrumentation and dynamic improvisation. The sixteenth Young Nordic Jazz Comets showcase will take place on 29 October 2015 at Klubi, at the Tampere Jazz Happening. All Nordic countries will be represented in this event. Aleatoric is an international group led by the Finnish pianist Aki Rissanen. Their repertoire consists of the leader’s and the Belgian saxophonist Robin Verheyen’s original compositions, Rissanen’s arrangement of “Kallaves”, the anthem of his hometown Kuopio, and a number of select standards. This group’s sonic world is made of floating swing netticasino suomi yle, impressionism, romanticism and free improvisation. Alexi Tuomarila Trio came into being in 2004. Their debut album, Constellation, was issued on the Norwegian label Jazzaway Records in 2005 and saw the group on extensive tours in Finland, Norway and the Benelux countries. It was around this time that doors to big leagues were thrown open for each of the group’s members: the cosmopolitan bandleader Tuomarila garnered prizes in piano contests around Europe, including Monaco, Granada, Avignon and Brussels. The Observer selected him on their list of six future talents. Drummer Teppo “Teddy Rok” Mäkynen’s big orchestra is full of the spirit of the West Coast in 50s and 60s. Led by the eponymous trombonist, Kasperi Sarikoski & Nuance is one of the most interesting newcomers of the Finnish jazz scene. Vocalist Mirja Mäkelä’s compositions give life to Finnish poetry. The semi-final sees four talented young groups compete for a place in the Young Nordic Jazz Comets Showcase, to be held at Umeå Jazz Festival in October 2016. This year, the winner and the audience’s favourite will be rewarded with more high-profile shows than ever before. Last year’s finalist, Katu Kaiku, will perform at the event before the announcement of the winning band. Mirja Mäkelä, vocals The exhibition will be open at April Jazz Festival, in Espoo, on 20 – 24 April. From Espoo, it will go nomad, stopping at different jazz festivals with and without the Finnish Jazz Federation Anniversary Orchestra, led by Mikko Innanen. The cavalcade of Yrjös will return to the Helsinki metropolitan area, to Helsinki’s Kirjasto 10 (Library 10), towards the close of 2016. In addition to Innanen, the Anniversary Orchestra is composed of some of the most recent Yrjö-knighted artists: guitarist Teemu Viinikainen, pianist Kari Ikonen, bassist Ulf Krokfors and drummer Teppo Mäkynen. At April Jazz on 22 April, there will be even more Yrjö energy on stage when the group is joined by Eero Koivistoinen, Seppo “Paroni” Paakkunainen, Severi Pyysalo, Antti Sarpila and Anna-Mari Kähärä – winners from all five decades of the prize. The orchestra’s repertoire consists of Finnish jazz from its very birth until today, as arranged by Mikko Innanen. Tickets to the concert will be available for purchase on 18 January. The Finnish Jazz Federation announces Ami Vuorinen as our new Executive Director. Vuorinen will start in the position on 1 September. Finland’s representative at the Young Nordic Jazz Comets showcase is Katu Kaiku. The saxophone trio is led by Adele Sauros. The Jazz Finland Festival kicked off with a seminar programme, part of the Europe Jazz Conference. The seminar spanned two days and a great number of topical questions pertaining to jazz today were covered in keynote presentations and working groups. The festival hosted the General Assembly of the Europe Jazz Network as well, and witnessed the presidency of EJN to pass on from Finn Annamaija Saarela to Ros Rigby of The Sage Gateshead concert house and Music Education Centre. In 2016, the Finnish Jazz Federation, the umbrella organisation of Finnish jazz, has furthered Finnish jazz culture for half a century. Anniversary year specialities include a historically significant publication, an Anniversary Orchestra with some of the finest Finnish jazzers and an art exhibition on the history of the Yrjö Jazz Prize, granted annually to an accomplished Finnish jazz musician by the Finnish Jazz Federation. The exhibition will be opened at the April Jazz Festival in Espoo, and the festival will also play host to the anniversary orchestra’s debut on stage. Both as a soloist and accompanier, Krokfors’s richly melodic and lyric style allows him to invest the music with subtle depth and dimension. His playing is always marked by a strong stage presence and a skill of building up and resolving musical tensions. Also, he has a vast amount of experience from working as a bassist, composer and conductor in the vanguard of Finnish jazz. It is a great pleasure to award a bassist, especially such a veteran as Uffe, Jori Huhtala, a member of the jury and a fellow bassist, sums up. Free Voices, Free Sounds Tour 2015: Aleatoric + Impérial Quartet 9 – 17 March 2015 The two projects (chosen by the Board of the Finnish Jazz Federation) will receive a maximum of 6.000 euros as production support, and they are free to use the grant to following expenses: Founded in 1966, the Finnish Jazz Federation celebrates its 50 years in enhancing the jazz culture in Finland. The anniversary celebrations begin with a concert of a jubilee orchestra, led by saxophonist Mikko Innanen. Innanen, like all the musicians and guest soloists in the band, have received the annual Yrjö prize from the Jazz Federation. The Yrjö prize is considered the highest accolade that a musician can receive for their artistic value and input to Finnish jazz. Later in the year the band tours Finnish jazz festivals with various soloists. The premiere in April Jazz displays the biggest array of guests on stage. Schedule: In spring 2016 We Jazz and the Finnish Jazz Federation co-produce two tours for two up-and-coming jazz groups. April 2016 sees Elena Mindru & The Rom Ensemble and May 2016 Fifth Avenue hit the road on a co-produced tour. The Varjo-Yrjö (or Shadow-Yrjö), granted each year by the Finnish Broadcasting Company’s Jazzradio to a society or body for promoting jazz culture in Finland, was received by Jussi Fredriksson of Flame Jazz ry. The Andania prize, which honours a life’s work in the field of jazz, was given to Juha Söder, a musician, pedagogue and long-standing Chairman of the Finnish Jazz Federation. Impérial Quartet is a delightful newcomer in the buzzing jazz scene of France. Four improvisers encountered each other in 2010, joined forces and formed a quartet whose influences come from many musical traditions, most notably from those of rock and jazz. Groovy beats and almost all member of the saxophone family are the cornerstones of Impérial Quartet’s exuberant and colourful expression. The uniqueness of their urban pop-jazz vision gained the group a place in the renowned Jazz Migration tour programme in 2013. Jori Huhtala 5 on tour 6 – 19 April 2015 The producer may also apply for further funding from any legal source – commercial or non-profit – but the external funding plan should be included in the production plan & budget, and all the received funding is to be reported during the production. Double-bassist Ulf Krokfors received the Yrjö prize on Friday 30 October at Tullikamarin Pakkahuone, Tampere Jazz Happening. Awarded annually by the Finnish Jazz Federation, the umbrella organisation of Finnish Jazz, the Yrjö is the most prestigious jazz prize in Finland. The Varjo-Yrjö prize, granted by the Finnish Broadcasting Company, Yleisradio, was given to Seppo Hanste for his active role in the jazz life of the Helsinki metropolitan area. The end of the touring season 2016 will see the award-winning pianist and his international trio on a long-awaited Finnish tour. “It is very interesting to see the results when one form of art has inspired another,” says the curator, art critic, MA Nina Suni. “Stylistically very different artists and works of art constitute the 50 years of the Yrjö Prize. The level of accomplishment is very varied, as well; some of the artists being devoted amateurs, while others are professionals of visual arts. We have handpicked only the artistically most significant and culturally most interesting pieces from each decade for the exhibition. And in keeping with the original philosophy of the prize, a tint of playfulness will not be lacking”, she ensures. The Finnish Jazz Federation has produced Jazz-Espa since 2000, with the support of Helsinki Cultural Office and the Finnish Music Foundation. Competing bands in Jazz Finland: Joona Toivanen released his first solo piano album ‘Polarities’ on the Swedish Footprint Records in late 2013. On the album, Toivanen explores new ground by studying the possibilities of the piano as an instrument. The release concert for Polarities took place at the Savoy Theatre in Helsinki on December 14 at the inaugural festival event We Jazz 2013. In November 2014 the solo project is heard live on the Finnish Jazz Federation tour. The association also supports two tours produced by independent agencies: Flame Jazz Messengers by Flame Jazz, and Timo Lassy Band’s tour by Diamond T Ltd. Schedule: Late November will see the award-winning pianist and his international trio on a long-awaited, extensive Finnish tour. The northernmost stop will be Oulu and southernmost Tallinn.
