Edited by - RonJeremy on 18/01/2004 04:28:31 Çarşamba, 05 Nisan 2017 15:49 In 2016, the Finnish Jazz Federation, the umbrella organisation of Finnish jazz, has furthered Finnish jazz culture for half a century. Anniversary year specialities include a historically significant publication, an Anniversary Orchestra with some of the finest Finnish jazzers and an art exhibition on the history of the Yrjö Jazz Prize, granted annually to an accomplished Finnish jazz musician by the Finnish Jazz Federation. The exhibition will be opened at the April Jazz Festival in Espoo, and the festival will also play host to the anniversary orchestra’s debut on stage. Jazz-Espa – two weeks during July 20th – Aug 9th Jazz Federation Tour: Alexi Tuomarila Trio 28 November – 11 December 2016 The Finnish Jazz Federation commits to organise 5 to 8 concerts by the selected band within a period of two weeks, primarily through its member associations. In case of an exceptionally large band, the minimum number of concerts might be reduced to 4 due to financial reasons. The Finnish Jazz Federation will produce the tour, pay fees and per diems to the artists and sound engineers, and pay all travel, accommodation and publicity- and marketing-related costs. Vuorinen holds a M.A. and in the past five years he has worked as a producer-publicist for the UMO Jazz Orchestra. Vuorinen will succeed Maati Rehor, who was appointed as the executive director for the chamber orchestra Avanti! in early August. Rehor worked for the Jazz Federation since 2008, and the Board, Office and the affiliated organizations wish Maati all the best in her new job! The Finnish Jazz Federation announces Ami Vuorinen as our new Executive Director. Vuorinen will start in the position on 1 September. Out of the over 60 applications, the Artistic Board of the Finnish Jazz Federation has selected four ensembles to tour the country in the fall season of 2017. That brings the total number of the federation’s annual tour productions to nine. For the fall tours in 2017, the Artistic Board selected Kalevi Louhivuori Quintet and Raoul Björkenheim Triad to perform on the federation’s own tours. The association also supports two tours produced by independent agencies: Flame Jazz Messengers by Flame Jazz, and Timo Lassy Band’s tour by Diamond T Ltd. The Finnish Jazz Convention is as old of a tradition as the federation itself, and for the past three years the event has found its home by the side of Tampere Jazz Happening festival during the All Saints Day weekend. Like every year, the General Assembly of the federation took place in Tampere, as well as the annual Yrjö award ceremony. In addition to wonderful musical experiences suomalainen casino magic, and relaxed atmosphere, the anniversary year’s Jazz Convention echoed with history and new inspiration. In addition to the tour organisation and development and Jazz Finland website, next year’s agenda consists, among others, of the following projects: strategic planning of Jazz Finland 2020, launching of a national new jazz club network, production of the Young Nordic Jazz Comets showcase at Tampere Jazz Happening 2015, and preparations for the Jazz Federation’s 50th anniversary year. The Finnish Jazz Federation was started in 1966, so semicentennial celebrations are in order in two years’ time, in 2016. The exhibition will be open at April Jazz Festival, in Espoo, on 20 – 24 April. From Espoo, it will go nomad, stopping at different jazz festivals with and without the Finnish Jazz Federation Anniversary Orchestra, led by Mikko Innanen. The cavalcade of Yrjös will return to the Helsinki metropolitan area, to Helsinki’s Kirjasto 10 (Library 10), towards the close of 2016. In addition to Innanen, the Anniversary Orchestra is composed of some of the most recent Yrjö-knighted artists: guitarist Teemu Viinikainen euro rail tickets, pianist Kari Ikonen, bassist Ulf Krokfors and drummer Teppo Mäkynen. At April Jazz on 22 April, there will be even more Yrjö energy on stage when the group is joined by Eero Koivistoinen, Seppo “Paroni” Paakkunainen, Severi Pyysalo, Antti Sarpila and Anna-Mari Kähärä – winners from all five decades of the prize. The orchestra’s repertoire consists of Finnish jazz from its very birth until today, as arranged by Mikko Innanen. Tickets to the concert will be available for purchase on 18 January. The organisation behind the YNJC comprises all Scandinavian umbrella organisations of jazz: Svensk Jazz, Norsk Jazzforum, Jazz Danmark and FIH Music School/Music Export Iceland. A plan that states clearly to which ends the support from the Finnish Jazz Federation will be used should be provided by applicants. The producer may also apply for further funding from any legal source – commercial or non-profit – but the external funding plan should be included in the production plan & budget, and all the received funding is to be reported during the production. Schedule: Led by the eponymous trombonist, Kasperi Sarikoski & Nuance is one of the most interesting newcomers of the Finnish jazz scene. German-born pianist Sid-Hille (b. 1961) has lived in Finland since 1994. By that time he had already travelled around the world and lived in the United States and the Netherlands, for example. In Finland net 90 days definition, Hille has taught at the Central Ostrobothnia Conservatory, conducting also the school’s jazz orchestra. In 1997 he formed the quartet Platypus Ensemble with three younger-generation Finnish players, and the group toured the Central Europe extensively. In the 21st century, Hille has mainly devoted his time to composing and performing, being successful as a composer in the fields of big band, chamber and film music, especially. The audio-visual concert is realised together with video artist Petri Ruikka. Amorandom (2012) is a short film, directed by Tuula Leinonen and Antti Peränne. It was the last film for Peränne, one of the pioneering animators in Finland, who passed away the same year. Amorandom recounts the story of an encounter of two people, exploring such themes as destiny and the unpredictability of life. The eight-minute film will be screened before the concert, after which the jazz trio and the video artist deconstruct it and create another, alternative world, giving birth to a new story, governed by different laws. The trio takes some musical cues from Aki Rissanen’s 2013 album Aleatoric. Album-launch Tour: Jorma Tapio & Kaski | Pauli Lyytinen Machinery 9 – 19 March 2016 The Finnish Jazz Federation commits to organise 5 to 8 concerts by the selected band within a period of two weeks, primarily through its member associations. Kasperi Sarikoski, trombone For more information on the Young Nordic Jazz Comets: The Finnish Broadcasting Company Yleisradio’s Varjo-Yrjö prize was rewarded for notable contribution to the Finnish jazz culture at the same event. This year’s winner was Seppo Hanste. “Alexi Tuomarila is one of the next big deals on jazz piano.” – Jazztimes, US Katu Kaiku The Finnish Jazz Federation will offer its PA equipment and tour bus (8 + 1 seats) at the selected band’s disposal free of charge, and provide an accommodation deal with Restel Oy hotels. Petteri Klintrup was appointed to a second term as the Chairman of the two-year board after a successful first term. Also, three new board members, freelance musicians Jori Huhtala and Petri Puolitaival and festival and big band director Matti Lappalainen, enter their first term next year. The Finnish Jazz Federation would like to thank musician Jaska Lukkarinen and Antti Suvanto of Jazzaimaa association for the past term as members of the board. Sitting members Jussi Fredriksson, Sakari Puhakka, Mikkomatti Aro, Annika Mustonen and Jari Hytti continue on the board for the following term. Tour dates: – The host of JazzPiknik, Radio Helsinki’s Njassa, launched a new term “jazz riot” after the fierce dancing and cheering on Dalindèo’s gig on Sunday, says Jazz Federation’s producer Annika Mustonen laughing. The pun was probably intended towards Saturday’s Kallio Block Party, where over 10,000 people partied on the streets without any police reports. The sixteenth Young Nordic Jazz Comets showcase will take place on 29 October 2015 at Klubi, at the Tampere Jazz Happening. All Nordic countries will be represented in this event. Double-bassist Ulf Krokfors received the Yrjö prize on Friday 30 October at Tullikamarin Pakkahuone, Tampere Jazz Happening. Awarded annually by the Finnish Jazz Federation, the umbrella organisation of Finnish Jazz, the Yrjö is the most prestigious jazz prize in Finland. The Varjo-Yrjö prize, granted by the Finnish Broadcasting Company, Yleisradio roulette table picture, was given to Seppo Hanste for his active role in the jazz life of the Helsinki metropolitan area. Kallio Slaaki is an exhilarating exception in the field of jazz and rhythm music. Drummers Mika Kallio, Mikko Hassinen and Anssi Nykänen have made their mark on the Finnish jazz history with their unique instrumentation and dynamic improvisation. Their distinguished sound is Kallio’s design and he also writes material for the trio. Kallio Slaaki released their debut album “Polymania For Percussion” on Fiasko Records in September 2013. The trio goes on the Finnish Jazz Federation tour in November 2014. See the whole program at www.jazzespa.fi On tour: The group released their debut album Outer Space (SatnaMusic CD141) in November 2014. Soon after, other projects started flooding in and it took as long as eight years before the trio’s sophomore was released. Tomasz Stanko had recruited Tuomarila and Louhivuori into the ranks of his band, while Eilertsen’s time was taken up by Tord Gustavsen’s trio. Their own groups, too, caused their ways to meet and diverge for years. In 2012 Alexi Tuomarila signed a three-album contract with the British label Edition Records, with the first one, entitled Seven Hills, coming out worldwide in 2013. The long-term friendship between the members and the strengthening of their individual voices together and separately has lent the trio’s sound its characteristic density of feeling and ease of communication. Jazz Federation Tour: Nina Mya 19 Sept – 2 Oct 2016 Founded in 1966, the Finnish Jazz Federation celebrates its 50 years in enhancing the jazz culture in Finland. The anniversary celebrations begin with a concert of a jubilee orchestra, led by saxophonist Mikko Innanen. Innanen, like all the musicians and guest soloists in the band, have received the annual Yrjö prize from the Jazz Federation. The Yrjö prize is considered the highest accolade that a musician can receive for their artistic value and input to Finnish jazz. Later in the year the band tours Finnish jazz festivals with various soloists. The premiere in April Jazz displays the biggest array of guests on stage. The following points will be given particular weight in the selection process: professionalism and the high quality and originality of the material. The level of professionalism will be assessed also in relation to promotion materials; ticket sales correlate positively with an informative homepage, for instance. Also, the group’s past activity and their topicality at the time of the tour (with regard to new releases etc.) will be taken into consideration. Whether the group has been selected before and when will also be taken into account. The Finnish Jazz Federation might end up offering a co-tour for two groups. Further, it should be ensured already at the stage of submitting the application that each group member should be available during the whole tour period that they are applying for. The end of the touring season 2016 will see the award-winning pianist and his international trio on a long-awaited Finnish tour. NOTE! Only ONE application per applicant. If you have several bands, applying with the group that is the most active and topical will maximise your chances of becoming selected. Include in the application your group’s or group members’ homepage(s), or any website on which music by your group is available to listen. In case there are no music samples available online, they should be sent in MP3 format by email to the address [email protected] . Tours supported by Finnish Jazz Federation: While having jazz as the red thread and bedrock of their music, Jori Huhtala 5 is not afraid of enriching their sound with some elements of pop and film music. The group’s style ranges from lyrical to cacophonic, traditional to avant-garde and rhythm-driven to pulselessly lingering. At the core, however, lie bassist Huhtala’s finely crafted compositions and the band members’ outstanding skills of improvisation. The band’s debut album is due to be released just before they hit the road this spring. Since the first steps taken together as a group, Jori Huhtala 5 have been followed with interest, and in 2014 they performed at Tampere Jazz Happening, for instance. All the members belong to the new generation of Finnish jazz musicians, whose artistic vision and professionalism are taking them rapidly to the bigger leagues. The two projects (chosen by the Board of the Finnish Jazz Federation) will receive a maximum of 6.000 euros as production support, and they are free to use the grant to following expenses: The main organizer, Finnish Jazz Federation is happy with this summer’s events. – “Uffe” Krokfors is known as a soulful and astonishingly expressive bassist who never fails to accommodate his virtuosity to the demands of a given piece of music. Both as a soloist and accompanier, Krokfors’s richly melodic and lyric style allows him to invest the music with subtle depth and dimension. His playing is always marked by a strong stage presence and a skill of building up and resolving musical tensions. Also, he has a vast amount of experience from working as a bassist, composer and conductor in the vanguard of Finnish jazz. It is a great pleasure to award a bassist, especially such a veteran as Uffe, Jori Huhtala, a member of the jury and a fellow bassist, sums up.
